Chapter 39

I hung up the phone and leaned on the counter to collect my thoughts and my breath. I now had a pulse in my stomach. I was coiled tight. I heaved a sigh and stretched my neck back and forth. It made several loud and rather unnatural cracks. Upon my third twist and pop, I glanced into Robert’s work area. The walls were covered with girlie pictures, covered with girlie pictures I had taken over the years…covered with girlie pictures I had just taken. I stopped my chiropractic cha-cha and walked toward the makeshift gallery full of the long-limbed, lusty, busty and beautiful…and the odd.

I’ve always been an open-minded cat. You can live and let live in whatever clothes you want in my book. But there’s always been something about drag queens that gets me. You simply can’t tone down a man’s angular harshness—the Adam’s apple, the nose, the five o’clock shadow, the hip-less swivel and heavy swagger. And if you put that next to a bodacious bombshell like Vickie Hayes, I don’t care how handsome you are, you’re a gargoyle, you’re just plain ugly and the jig is up. The pictures on the wall of Vickie and the judge proved my point and gave me a shudder. Good ol’ Robert’s tastes were getting more sophisticated. He had made himself some copies.

I tore them off the wall and shoved them into an envelope.

“Tell Robert I’ll get these back to him,” I said to Carl as he handed me an old German Luger and a sock full of bullets. He showed me how to load it and I stuck it in my waistband. I started to thank him, but he cut me off with a wave of his hand. I turned and trotted toward the car as he called out behind me.

“Be careful,” he said. “That thing hasn’t been fired since the war.”
